The Flower Encounter Painting Workshop at the Fat Mulberry Guest House
The Fat Mulberry hosted a three day workshop over a beautiful weekend in February providing lunches, teas and accommodation to the guests attending the workshop. While the renowned artist, Shena Kelly Macdonald, gave lessons on how to use oil paints and brushes to create personal, floral masterpieces.
The process leading up to the workshop included asking the attendees to choose their favourite flower and sourcing the image they would love to paint. Shena was part of this, offering advice (the image should be a close up with good composition and lighting), or finding suitable photos (often her own) for the guests to use.
Once the picture was decided on Shena did all the initial drawing so the budding artists could focus primarily on their painting technique during the workshop. The only thing guests needed to bring was a bottle of mineral turps, an apron and palettes. Shena provided the canvas and oil paints.
Owner of The Fat Mulberry Guest House, Margie Jordaan, was one of the people doing The Flower Encounter Workshop and she loved it, saying,
“What a creative and inspiring weekend we had with Shena Macdonald who is an excellent art teacher. We loved having eight budding artist at The Fat Mulberry and the Shed space was perfect. Even the animals loved sitting while we painted and
were right at home! If we ever felt out of our depth Shena was always close by, patient and encouraging. Thank you to everyone who came - every painting is a work of art.”
We’d like to thank Shena for inspiring us, and for her wonderful words about our space:
“This studio at The Fat Mulberry Guesthouse in Fouriesburg has to get the prize for one of the most beautiful views!”
We hope you’ll join us for the next one!
